Nice-Lessons

November 10, 2009

We have had the pleasure of borrowing a friends car for the past week, and when I say pleasure, understand that I am a guy and things like this just make me happy, I’m simple like that. Its not just any car, its a Landrover Defender 110, which in most “guy worlds” is a pretty cool car to be driving around Africa. Anyway, the friend we know here who owns it is out of town for the 9 days and asked if we wanted to use it while he was gone, and considering that our Bug is sitting in the driveway with a broken engine (again) we had a hard time turning him down. Well the first time we took his car out we made it about a half mile down the road and it ran out of gas, luckily the guy who loaned us the car was still in town and we called him to get some gas for us. Meanwhile we sat on the side of the road for about a half hour waiting for him. In the first three minutes two guys who were walking down the street stopped and motioned (our language still leaves something to be desired) to see if we wanted them to push the car into a parking space, it was like there was no way they were going to walk past unless we let them help us out, then a few minutes later, now that the car (or should I say Land Rover Defender 110) (such a guy, I know…) was in a parking space, a man pulled over acoss the street and stopped his car, he then crossed the four lane road in his suit and came up to our window, “Would you like a ride?” He asked, his english was almost perfect. “I just noticed that you were sitting here and turned around to see if you needed me to take you home” Its amazing how gentle and kind these people are, I think when we first got here we would have thought that they wanted something from us or were trying to rip us off somehow but we have come to learn that they are just really nice people and want to help out in any way they can. We thankfully declined the mans help and he shook our hand and was on his way, a few minutes later our friend pulled up with a can of gas and we were on our way, given the experience we had, I think we were actually glad we ran out of gas, its just one more confirmation that we have a lot to learn from this culture and thankfully a lot of time to learn it.
