The Ethiopian Minivan

September 30, 2009

As we mentioned in the past few posts, we are now making the city (the Capitol) our home base. After deciding that the children were going to be adopted we started trying to process all the paperwork that needed to be processed and came to the realization that the town where the orphanage is is just to far out and disconnected from the rest of the world to try and get something as complicated as international adoption done.  So we now find ourselves here in the city, we rented a house and have been buzzing around the city trying to settle in and get the paperwork rolling. The first thing we noticed is that that Taxi rides are way more expensive, for instance a ride where the orphanage is on a taxi costs 1 Birr (about 7 Cents) and a taxi ride here in the city costs 50 Birr (4 dollars) yeah way more expensive.  So we asked around and found that the cheapest car we could buy was a WV Bug. Pretty much the same story as back home.  When we started asking the people here where to get one we heard that a Eyasu a guy we already knew was working on fixing one up to sell, and so we bought the hot little ride you see below, its a 69 Bug and Eyasu did an incredible job fixing everything up so it runs great. There is no way that back home a family with four children could fit in one but here seat belts and car seats are non existent, so we fit just fine!

  1. This post is so great. I love the different perspective living overseas gives you! We prayerfully will be headed to Addis at the end of Oct- just waiting for the courts to open so we can go get our little Eyasu. :) He is 3.

    Best to you guys.

That is just awesome! When we were with my sister in Romania we piled 4 adults and five children into what was basically a Honda hatchback wagon. Who needs seat belts, when you’re sitting that close no one is going anywhere even if you get in an accident!

  3. Classic! Love it, your kids will never forget it.

  4. Love the car! In ’69 no one was wearing seat belt here either! :)
